Abstract
Purpose : This study examines the development process of the optometric system and education, identifies problems related to the current supply and demand of optometrists through the analysis of optometric manpower in Korea. Through this, it predicts possible future situations, and proposes countermeasures.

Methods : Past literature, previous studies, the Ministry of Health and Welfare, the Korean Optometric Association, and university reminders were used.

Results : The supply of domestic optometrist is expected to increase every year. Currently, as the activity rate of optometrists is low, oversupply and excessive competition due to this are intensifying. The population per one optical shop is 4,947, and the population per active optometrist is 2,510. If this is the population wearing vision corrective spectacles, it appears lower. If this problem persists for 10 years, assuming a 70% pass rate for the national examination license exam, the population per optometrist in 2030 will decrease by 517 to 1,993.

Conclusion : About 30 years after the optometrist's license system was implemented, the current education system and the job of an optometrist have changed, and a detailed review of related laws and systems is required. Currently, the oversupply of optometrists has caused excessive competition throughout the optics industry and has adversely affected the public vision health along with the decline in the quality of optometrists. Therefore, in order to improve the public vision health service, it is urgently necessary to prepare professional and institutional improvement measures to strengthen the expertise of opticians and resolve the supply-demand imbalance.
